U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. James L. Horr, (Left), sergeant major of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit speaks with Sgt. Maj. Troy E. Black, (Right), the 19th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, while touring an Afghan village on Fort Pickett, Virginia, Dec. 8, 2021. The purpose of the visit was to receive a tour of Fort Pickett, meet with service members across the Task Force, and discuss future plans for Operation Allies Welcome. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
