U.S. Marines with 3rd battalion, 6th Marine Regiment (3/6), 2d Marine Division board a bus to depart Fort Pickett on Nov. 15, 2021. Marines and Sailors with 3/6 conducted a relief in place and transfer of authority with Marines and Sailors from 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment. The approximately 500 Marines also included augments from 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion and 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
