U.S. Marines with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and Sailors with the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), put on life preserving units aboard the USS Kearsarge before departing for a key leader engagement with representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Puerto Rico National Guard, in the Caribbean Sea, Sept. 22, 2017. The 26th MEU brings diverse capabilities and is positioned in the region awaiting tasking to support FEMA, the lead federal agency, in helping those affected by Hurricane Maria to minimize suffering and is one component of the overall whole-of-government response effort.
