The guide on, American flag and 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit standard are displayed in front of the command element’s building on Camp Lejeune, N.C., Oct. 14, 2011. The tradition of Marine Corps units bearing flags and standards originated when a battalion led by Capt. Samuel Nicholas, first commandant of the Marine Corps, carried the Grand Union flag ashore on New Providence Island, Bahamas in March of 1776.
