New York native Cpl. Kenneth Vandame participated in the commissioning of USS New York, the Navy’s newest landing platform dock at Pier 88 in Manhattan, Nov. 7. With 7 1/2 tons of steel recovered from the World Trade Center, the ship holds particular meaning for Vandame, who lost two friends and a distant cousin Sept. 11, 2001
