Capt. Jonathan Pfuntner, assistant communications officer with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, watches as the SkySat High Altitude Operational Payload system's balloon and payload quickly rises to its operational altitude. This was the first launch of SkySat from the USS Iwo Jima and only the second Naval vessel from which the unit has been launched. SkySat could one day help Marines in the field with handheld radios communicate as far as 500 miles, regardless of terrain. 26th MEU Marines learned about the system Jan. 12 and got hands-on with the gear during the next several days.
