Role of the Staff Judge Advocate:

The Staff Judge Advocate (SJA) serves as the command's primary legal advisor and is a special staff officer who reports directly to the MEU Commanding Officer (CO). The SJA furnishes legal advice on matters pertaining to operational, criminal, and administrative law to the MEU CO, subordinate commanders, and the MEU staff. The SJA communicates legal policy and standards for the command, participates in operational planning, and exercises staff cognizance over all legal issues within the command. Additionally, the SJA is a licensed attorney who can assist Marines and Sailors assigned or attached to the MEU with personal legal problems that are not disciplinary in nature. The SJA also coordinates passport applications, serves as the voting officer, and is the fraud, waste and abuse representative.
