Public Web Site for the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit

Dec 5, 2008

Corporal Ashley R. Pfiefer and Sgt Anthony H. Apongan, both designated mail handlers with the Communications section of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit's Command Element, gather mail for their section's Marines . Hundreds of care packages and letters arrive every week for the Marines and sailors of the MEU and USS Iwo Jima. Upon arrival, the mail is usually brought to the ship's hanger bay, one of the few places aboard large enough to handle sorting and distribution. "When I get a package from home," said Petty Officer 1st Class Myesha Booker, "and I know my husband has touched that package, when I put my hand on that same exact spot he's put his hand on, it's like us connecting. It's like us touching each other. ... We call it 'a little bit of love in the mail.' The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Iwo Jima Strike Group are currently deployed to the 5th Fleet area of operation.
